Cemetery Engagement Session
“Until death do us part.”
When Caroline and Andrew initially told me that they wanted to do their engagement photos at a local cemetery here in Kansas City, it was a first for me. I’d never done a session in a cemetery before and questioned the idea for a moment, for obvious reasons. When they explained why they wanted to do this, it absolutely clicked. A commitment to marriage is a commitment for life - until death do us part. Union Cemetery is a special place for these two because it represents all of the couples that rest here who had made that same commitment. I love this perspective on death - rather than something to fear and cemeteries as a place to be avoided, viewing it as something to celebrate. There was such reverence for what this place meant to them and now I want to come back here all the time. It’s beautiful.
Union Cemetery in Kansas City
Union Cemetery is the oldest cemetery in Kansas City. It was founded in 1857 and is the resting place of many historical figures in Kansas City’s history. It was so beautiful to walk around there for an evening. The trees are huge and keep it shady and cool even on a hot summer night. There were couples having picnics and walking their dogs. It didn’t give me the haunted spooky vibes that you might expect from a cemetery - although I think that might just be a thing of the movies. I am so grateful that they introduced me to it.
